What is Base64 Encode?
Base64 is a way of writing binary data using only 64 safe, printable characters: A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, plus and slash. An equals sign is added at the end when padding is needed.
It exists because many systems, such as email and URLs, were built to carry text and can corrupt raw bytes. Base64 lets any data travel through them unharmed.
What this tool does
Converts the text you type into its Base64 form. The text is first turned into UTF-8 bytes, so accented letters, Hindi, Japanese and emoji encode correctly.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Leave Auto ticked to see the result as you type, or untick it and press Base64 Encode.
- Copy the encoded result with the copy button.
Did you know?
- Base64 turns every 3 bytes into 4 characters, so the encoded text is about one third larger than the original.
- Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or secrets.
- It is used in email attachments (MIME), data URIs for inline images, and the tokens inside JSON Web Tokens.
