Decodes Base64 text back into readable text. Invalid Base64 shows an error instead of a result.

What is Base64 Decode?

Base64 decoding reverses Base64 encoding. It takes the 64-character alphabet back to the original bytes, which are then read as text.

You meet Base64 in data URIs, email source, API responses and tokens, and decoding it is the quickest way to see what it actually contains.

What this tool does

Converts Base64 text back into the original text, reading the bytes as UTF-8. If the input is not valid Base64, or does not decode to valid text, the tool shows an error message.

How to use it

  1. Paste the Base64 string into the box.
  2. Leave Auto ticked to decode as you type, or untick it and press Base64 Decode.
  3. Read or copy the decoded text from the result box.

Did you know?

  • Decoding only works on text. If the Base64 holds an image or a file, the result will not be readable text.
  • A valid Base64 string has a length that is a multiple of 4 once padding is included.
  • Because Base64 is not encryption, decoding needs no key or password.
