What is BMI Calculator?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number that relates a person's weight to their height. It is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared.
It is used as a simple screening tool to see whether weight might be too low or too high for a person's height.
What this tool does
Calculates your BMI from your height and weight, shows the number on a gauge, and names the range it falls in: underweight (below 18.5), normal (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25 to 29.9) or obese (30 and above).
How to use it
- Enter your height and your weight.
- Press Convert.
- Read your BMI and its category.
Did you know?
- The formula was developed in the 1830s and 1840s by the Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet. The name Body Mass Index was proposed by Ancel Keys in 1972.
- BMI does not tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people can be placed in a higher range even if they are healthy.
- It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Talk to a doctor about your health.
