What is Calorie Calculator?

A calorie calculator estimates how much energy your body uses in a day. Your body burns energy even at rest, which is called your basal metabolic rate (BMR), and more when you are active.

The total, your daily energy expenditure, is roughly the number of calories you need to eat to keep your weight steady.

What this tool does

Works out your BMR from your age, sex, height and weight using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then multiplies it by an activity factor from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (super active) to estimate your daily maintenance calories.

How to use it

  1. Enter your age in years, weight in kilograms and height in centimetres.
  2. Choose male or female, and pick the activity level that best matches your week.
  3. Read your estimated daily calories. Eat less than this to lose weight, or more to gain.

Did you know?

  • The Mifflin-St Jeor equation was published in 1990 and is widely considered more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict equation for most people.
  • The calories on food labels are really kilocalories: one food Calorie equals 1,000 small calories.
  • The result is an estimate. Real needs vary with muscle mass, genetics and health, so treat it as a starting point.
