About kilobytes and bytes
A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes in this converter, which follows the binary convention used by most operating systems.
A byte is 8 bits. It can hold 256 different values, which is enough to store one letter or digit of basic text.
How the conversion works
Converts kilobytes to bytes, and back again. Type a value in either box and the other one updates as you type. The conversion uses 1 kilobyte = 1,024 bytes.
Kilobyte to Byte conversion table
| kilobytes | bytes |
|---|---|
| 1 kilobyte | 1,024 bytes |
| 2 kilobytes | 2,048 bytes |
| 5 kilobytes | 5,120 bytes |
| 10 kilobytes | 10,240 bytes |
| 25 kilobytes | 25,600 bytes |
| 50 kilobytes | 51,200 bytes |
| 100 kilobytes | 102,400 bytes |
| 1,000 kilobytes | 1,024,000 bytes |
How to use it
- Enter a value in kilobytes to see it in bytes, or type in the other box to convert the opposite way.
- Check the quick conversion table below for common values.
- To convert by hand, multiply the number of kilobytes by 1,024.
Did you know?
- In 1998 the IEC introduced the name kibibyte (KiB) for 1,024 bytes, so that kilobyte could mean exactly 1,000.
- The word byte was coined in 1956 and deliberately spelled with a y so it would not be mistaken for bit.
