About bytes and kilobytes
A byte is 8 bits. It can hold 256 different values, which is enough to store one letter or digit of basic text.
A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes in this converter, which follows the binary convention used by most operating systems.
How the conversion works
Converts bytes to kilobytes, and back again. Type a value in either box and the other one updates as you type. The conversion uses 1 byte = 0.000976563 kilobytes.
Byte to Kilobyte conversion table
| bytes | kilobytes |
|---|---|
| 1 byte | 0.000976563 kilobytes |
| 2 bytes | 0.00195313 kilobytes |
| 5 bytes | 0.00488281 kilobytes |
| 10 bytes | 0.00976563 kilobytes |
| 25 bytes | 0.0244141 kilobytes |
| 50 bytes | 0.0488281 kilobytes |
| 100 bytes | 0.0976563 kilobytes |
| 1,000 bytes | 0.976563 kilobytes |
How to use it
- Enter a value in bytes to see it in kilobytes, or type in the other box to convert the opposite way.
- Check the quick conversion table below for common values.
- To convert by hand, multiply the number of bytes by 0.000976563.
Did you know?
- The word byte was coined in 1956 and deliberately spelled with a y so it would not be mistaken for bit.
- In 1998 the IEC introduced the name kibibyte (KiB) for 1,024 bytes, so that kilobyte could mean exactly 1,000.
