About kilobytes and bits
A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes in this converter, which follows the binary convention used by most operating systems.
A bit is the smallest unit of digital data. It holds a single value, either 0 or 1. The word is short for binary digit.
How the conversion works
Converts kilobytes to bits, and back again. Type a value in either box and the other one updates as you type. The conversion uses 1 kilobyte = 8,192 bits.
Kilobyte to Bit conversion table
| kilobytes | bits |
|---|---|
| 1 kilobyte | 8,192 bits |
| 2 kilobytes | 16,384 bits |
| 5 kilobytes | 40,960 bits |
| 10 kilobytes | 81,920 bits |
| 25 kilobytes | 204,800 bits |
| 50 kilobytes | 409,600 bits |
| 100 kilobytes | 819,200 bits |
| 1,000 kilobytes | 8,192,000 bits |
How to use it
- Enter a value in kilobytes to see it in bits, or type in the other box to convert the opposite way.
- Check the quick conversion table below for common values.
- To convert by hand, multiply the number of kilobytes by 8,192.
Did you know?
- In 1998 the IEC introduced the name kibibyte (KiB) for 1,024 bytes, so that kilobyte could mean exactly 1,000.
- Internet speeds are usually quoted in bits per second, while file sizes are quoted in bytes.
