About bits and kilobytes
A bit is the smallest unit of digital data. It holds a single value, either 0 or 1. The word is short for binary digit.
A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes in this converter, which follows the binary convention used by most operating systems.
How the conversion works
Converts bits to kilobytes, and back again. Type a value in either box and the other one updates as you type. The conversion uses 1 bit = 0.00012207 kilobytes.
Bit to Kilobyte conversion table
| bits | kilobytes |
|---|---|
| 1 bit | 0.00012207 kilobytes |
| 2 bits | 0.000244141 kilobytes |
| 5 bits | 0.000610352 kilobytes |
| 10 bits | 0.0012207 kilobytes |
| 25 bits | 0.00305176 kilobytes |
| 50 bits | 0.00610352 kilobytes |
| 100 bits | 0.012207 kilobytes |
| 1,000 bits | 0.12207 kilobytes |
How to use it
- Enter a value in bits to see it in kilobytes, or type in the other box to convert the opposite way.
- Check the quick conversion table below for common values.
- To convert by hand, multiply the number of bits by 0.00012207.
Did you know?
- Internet speeds are usually quoted in bits per second, while file sizes are quoted in bytes.
- In 1998 the IEC introduced the name kibibyte (KiB) for 1,024 bytes, so that kilobyte could mean exactly 1,000.
