What is Chmod Calculator?
On Linux and macOS every file has permissions for three groups: the owner, the group and everyone else. Each group can read, write and execute.
The chmod command sets them, usually with a three digit number such as 755.
What this tool does
The first part builds the number and the letters (like rwxr-xr-x) from your choices. The second part reads a three digit number and explains what each group can do. Both show the ready-to-use chmod command.
How to use it
- Pick the permissions for the owner, group and others.
- Read the octal number and the command.
- Or type a number to see what it means.
Did you know?
- Read is 4, write is 2 and execute is 1. Add them up: 7 means all three and 5 means read and execute.
- 755 is common for programs and folders, and 644 for ordinary files.
